- The Early Years
Duncan obtained two out of three Technics 1200's he still uses in 1992, along with a black sheep record and a cassette of Smart-E's "Sesame's Treet". Two years later, under a board of directors whose names still hang on plaques in the WVUM offices, he would begin The Underground on WVUM, the only place, besides the heavily flyered raves he and his friend Isis promoted, that one could hear house and tekkkno music. A strong opponent of Miami Bass, Duncan and his faithful companion, DJ Stryke, hosted all that was Miami's underground scene. From Oscar G to LTJ Bukem, if it was loud they made it proud. After unceremoniously graduating, Duncan could not let his house addiction go, and started The Womb in 1997, the first streaming internet audio and video feed and "micro-broadcast" of live DJ's based in Miami Beach. After a run-in with the FBI/DEA about an antenna he knows nothing about, Duncan was hired by fashion tv paris to run their music and new media departments. Seizing the opportunity, Duncan began an 8 yr career with fashion tv that allowed him to be based in Paris and DJ around Europe culminating with a track on the 2004 Compilation on John Digweeds "Bedrock" records by remixers of the year John Creamer and Stephane K. Now, 16 yrs later, Duncan returns to the airwaves of his alma mater and his original home on The Underground.
The ShowAfter so much time as a DJ and fan of electronic music, what will The Underground be, in this newest incarnation. "I have a theory" Says Duncan, "The occasional House music listener begins his interest with Trance. You hear electronic music at a party and you immediately want music that fills your mind, and your speakers. After that you start to piece apart the music, appreciating the little, "minimal" things. If you started with trance..this will lead you to tech house. There has been, and you will hear, thousands of great records in this genre since 1994, and this is what I want to bring you on The Underground." Does this mean tech-house is the end all be all of electronic music? Says Duncan "No. If you ask me who your favorite DJ is, I will tell you Derrick Carter. Derrick, who is most certainly NOT tech house, plays music that anyone..even my grandmother, who I often used as a bellweather of my tracks, can dance too. He plays bumpin, chunky music, of a type that I just can't find. When I master that sound..."
In the meantime, you have The Underground, every Saturday night from 9-11pm, on WVUM, Miami's finest music station.
